President Lyndon Johnson said, “In this century, more than 1.5 million of our fellow citizens have died on our streets and highways; nearly three times as many Americans as have lost in all our wars.”
Something was going to change. With that, President Johnson signed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act into law. He then signed the Highway Safety Act. With these two bills signed into law, it made the federal government responsible for setting and enforcing safety standards for cars and roads.
President Johnson said unsafe highways, were a menace to the publics health.
I guess you can say we have come a long way.
